Rent-A-Thug #215 – Two Crooks, a Croc, and a Fine Pair of Shoes part 1

Aaaand we’re back. Hope you all had a good Christmas/other Holidays season. This new story is about half as long as the last one and perhaps a bit stronger. I liked the last one, and I think it was an important story in establishing a lot of the background material of Rent-A-Thug, but in hindsight it’s a bit more disjointed than I would have liked. This story is a bit tighter in its execution, I think.

Drawing Dirk the Head and his apartment was a lot of fun. There’s a section in Scott McCloud’s book, “Making Comics” about using setting to reveal more about a character, and I decided that this page would be a good place to try putting it into practice. Hence the “Nuclear Knockers 4” poster, dirty magazines (complete with tissue box) and the general filth. Well, the general filth isn’t really unique to Dirk’s apartment, as I use it quite a bit. I’m quite fond of the third panel, where Dirk is eating cereal off of his stomach and watching TV. The second panel is based on this Rules For Criminal Success strip. The little Dirk head next to his narration box is a trick I first used on another project that I decided to use for this story since the narration switches back and forth between Dirk and Nixon.

Thanks for reading, see you Wednesday!
