This joke came from the Rent-A-Thug card game that I was developing at one point. One of the cards featured Johnny Mushface shaking a ticking box with a caption along the lines of “Why is it ticking? That’s bad, right?” I can’t remember what card that was off the top of my head. I decided to use Mr. Nixon in this strip instead of Johnny Mushface pretty much entirely because I hadn’t drawn Nixon for a while before sitting down to draw this one. Some strips are written with specific characters in mind, but for the most part, “Hey, I haven’t drawn so-and-so in a while” is what determines who ends up in what strip.

The next month or so will be Rules For Criminal Success strips, possibly with a couple of short (and I mean short, like 1-3 pages) stories in there somewhere if I get some spare time to draw them. I’ve been hired to do the art for a comic by a local writer and that’s been taking up a lot of the time I’d usually be using to draw Rent-A-Thug. On the plus side, I’m a strip short of having the next five weeks’ worth of Rent-A-Thug comics finished, so that project shouldn’t cut into my ability to update at all.
