Rent-A-Thug Christmas Special 2009

Merry Christmas, folks! With only five minutes to spare.

Holiday Update Schedule

I thought I’d post the Holiday update schedule in a blog post just in case people don’t read the news posts (although in that case I have no idea why you’d be reading THIS… whatever).

Next week there won’t be any regular updates (M-W-F), as I’m taking the week off. On Thursday, December 25th I’ll be posting the second Rent-A-Thug Christmas Special.

Regular updates will resume on Monday, December 29th.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, or whatever other seasonal greeting you prefer.

Rent-A-Thug on Heavy Ink!

Rent-A-Thug: First Offence is now available online at Heavy Ink! Heavy Ink is a damn fine online store with free shipping, and now you can get Rent-A-Thug: First Offence from them. Want even better news? Heavy Ink sells all of their product at discounted prices, so First Offence is only four bucks! Sweet!

Good News/Bad News

Hey folks, I’ve got some good news and bad news. Unless you’re a Columbus Blue Jackets fan, then I’ve mostly got bad news.

Bad news is that today’s comic is going to be late. It’ll be up tomorrow, though, which is the good news (or maybe really late tonight, depending on how long it takes me to draw. Tomorrow’s a better bet though).

In other good news, the Oilers shellacked the Blue Jackets 7-2 last night. They certainly delivered on the goal-scoring I was hoping for, and Dustin Penner seems to have gotten his act together after riding the pine for a couple of games. A nifty goal and a hilarious bit of goaltender interference that the referees completely ignored on Tom Gilbert’s marker is a pretty good way to get back into the action. Liam Reddox is definitely making the most of his call-up from the minors, too. I hope he sticks around for a while.

But yeah, for non-hockey fans (or heathens, as we call them in Canada), new comic Thursday.

Happy Remembrance Day

It’s November 11th, Remembrance Day (or Veteran’s Day, and I think there are a few other holidays around the world that are essentially the same thing with a different name). In honour of this holiday I’ve gotten started working on a First World War comic that I hope to be finished by this time next year. I’ve also spent a lot more time than normal watching documentaries on the History Channel. As a bit of a bonus update I’ve uploaded the pencils for the first page of “The Trenches” to the Illustrations gallery. You can check it out there or just click the thumbnail below.

The Trenches, page 1 pencils

There’s a bit of historical commentary in the Illustrations gallery to go along with that page, if you’re inclined to read it.

Happy Remembrance Day!

Pure Speculation, coming soon!

The Pure Speculation Festival is coming up on October 18th and 19th, 2008! It’s going to be at the Hazeldean Community Centre again, which proved to be a very gracious host last year. I’ll be there as a vendor again. I’ll be bringing copies of Rent-A-Thug: First Offence (36 pages, including ten print-exclusive pages, for only $5!), Rent-A-Thug baseball caps ($25, very limited supply), and Charlie No-Aim and G-Fresh prints (only $1 each!). I’ll also be debuting a new print, Hockeypocalypse (also only $1).

I’ve had a bunch of people ask for that illustration to be made into a print, and now it is! I’m also going to be working on a piece for the Pure Spec art show, although I’m not sure what exactly it’s going to be yet. It might be Hockeypocalypse-related. The Oilers pre-season just got started a few days ago and it’s got me itchin’ to draw some hockey playing mutants.

In non-Pure Spec news, I added three new drawings to the Illustrations page. I’ve been doing research on the Canadian Corps fighting in World War I for one of my classes and it got me inspired. Speaking of illustrations, I did a drawing for Rudi Gunther of Deathworld fame that popped up in his guest art gallery at some point without me noticing it. If you want to see a big ol’ robot, check it out.

So to recap: I’ll be at Pure Spec, come say hi. Also, Steve Rolston of Queen & Country fame will be there. And game designer Monte Cook of D&D (and like a thousand other RPGs). I have no idea how the Pure Spec folks managed to get such big-name guests, but good on ’em for it.
