Stan makes his first appearance in a story (he’s previously appeared in this Rules For Criminal Success strip). After drawing him in that strip I knew that I had to bring him back at some point, and this proved to be a fun opportunity to do so. There’s a big time cut between the last page and the one after this, so I decided to cover it with a quick return to Mushface’s interview with Warner. That led to thinking that there must be other people around (production staff, lighting people, etc.), and decided that Mushface would probably have somebody there with him. Sort of like the gangster version of an entourage. And thus I had an opportunity to include Stan, and a joke about him eating somebody’s soul for an inane offence.

I can’t remember where the idea of having Johnny Mushface hang out with the devil came from, but I’m very fond of the absurdity of the devil wandering around in a suit and insisting that his name is Stan. Eating people’s souls probably doesn’t do much to make folks believe that he’s just a big red guy as opposed to, y’know, the devil.

This weekend is the Pure Speculation Festival. I’ll have a vendor table there, so you should come say hi. And buy stuff. 🙂
