I try to make sure the Mobile Oppression Patrol live up to their name every so often. In the first story they were actually more like a legitimate counter-terrorism unit than a gang of bastards with an unlimited licence to wreak havoc in the name of national security. They’re appearance in this story was going to be more in the same vein as the first story until I realized that they probably weren’t coming across like they were supposed to. I figure strafing the surrounding buildings with gunfire and tossing canisters of stun gas into a crowd of civilians should get things moving toward the “gang of bastards” idea. Also on this page is a better look at the design of the Jackhammer Light Machinegun, which is based off of the British Bren gun.

Just a reminder that the update schedule is changing to once weekly starting next week. It may or may not actually go up on Tuesday, though. Between three Rent-A-Thug pages and the first week of final exams finding time to draw the next page might be an issue.

These cityscapes always seem like a great idea until I have to ink them. Takes forever. This one used four different pens (.08, .05, .01, and .005 mm). The M.O.P. trooper with the machine gun is using a design based on the British Bren gun. You’ll get a better look at it on Thursday.

The M.O.P. chopper’s announcement in the last panel was added while I was drawing the page because this page didn’t have anything resembling a joke on it. To be honest I pretty much lifted it from The Holiday Men then mangled it to fit my purposes. So if you like that line, go read The Holiday Men. You can find a link to it in the sidebar on the Rent-A-Thug main page. Or you could just go to The Chemistry Set. That last sentence was inserted to prevent violent reprisal from Foley and Johnson (though Johnson lives in a different city and I fancy my chances of being able to outrun Foley).

I was too lazy to spell check it, but I think I spelled “dasvidanja” wrong.

Also, city scapes take a while to draw. They take longer to ink. The city scape on this page, for example, used three different types of pen width.

Even in the heat of battle Dan Mills can take time out to feel bad for using bystanders as bullet magnets. Doesn’t stop him from doing it, but at least he feels bad about it.

I’m currently working on a paper that needs to be done by Thursday and have a loooooong day ahead of me tomorrow, so I’m going to cut this short and get back to that whole academia thing.

I think this is the first time we’ve seen Mills in a while; by now he’s taken up his position as a plant in the crowd. Unfortunately the Hchma’Hcha Initiates are filling that same crowd with bullets. The “Panic” sound effect is both a joke and laziness. I like sound effects that are basically just descriptions of what’s going on, which is the joke. The laziness is that it’s basically there because I didn’t want to draw a bunch of people in the crowd looking panicked, because crowds take freaking foreeeeeeever to draw.

The update schedule is going to be changing fairly soon, more on that when I have something that’s actually informative to add to that.

Ah, Colonel Cozalien’s plan comes together. And by “plan” I mean “a bunch of whackjob terrorists jump out of the sewers with guns”. Like pretty much every other artist, I hate drawing crowds and use cheats to imply a crowd as opposed to drawing every single person. Hence the back row of the crowd and then a big black blob.
