Rent-A-Thug #287 – ‘Shroom With A View part 7

The first panel has a new technique that I tried for the first time. I used white paint to continue the window streak across Mickey’s silhouette to do a Sin City kinda thing. Looks like I should have used more paint, though, to get the scanner to pick up a nice, solid white. I’m pretty sure that’s now how Frank Miller got his badass black/white interplay in Sin City, but it works for my purposes.

There was a kind of odd piece in the Edmonton Journal sports section today about whether or not the Visnovsky trade was worth it in hindsight. The basic argument was that Matt Greene and Jarrett Stoll (who were dealt to LA for Visnovsky last summer) filled roles on the Oilers that haven’t been filled after their departure, whereas Visnovsky fills a role that already has three players capable of filling it (Souray, Gilbert, and Grebeshkov). While it’s true that the Oilers have an overabundance of offensive defencemen, nobody knew Gilbert and Grebeshkov would produce at the level they had. Also, Greene’s role as a stay-at-home defenceman was already filled (Steve Staios and Ladislav Smid, anyone?). Stoll was definitely more valuable than he seemed when he was dealt, because nobody could match his skills in the faceoff circle or his penalty-killing, but ultimately Visnovsky put up more points than Stoll and Greene in their previous season and played 20+ minutes per game. If Kyle Brodziak had been about 6% better in the faceoff circle the Oilers would have clearly come out ahead on the deal.

Thanks for reading! Have a good weekend and I’ll see you on Tuesday!
