Rent-A-Thug #179 – King of the Streets part 9

After Friday’s plot-mover, things actually happen! Well, sort of. I managed to accomplish a lot of things on this page, which made me happy. We learn a bit about Johnny Mushface’s background before turning to a life of crime AND I managed to fit in a joke about violence. Also, unlike the crap text placements that I mentioned a few pages ago, I’m very happy with the text placements on this one. Especially the first few panels, where they essentially serve to reverse the normal reading direction.

The war photo behind Mushface in the second panel was my favourite part of this page to draw. His AR-50 is a really specific reference that I don’t expect many people to get (unless, like me, you’ve studied drawing guns quite a bit). The Colt M-16 was introduced without the barrel-ribbing that is common on the current models. The ribbed-barrel models were introduced partway throughout the Vietnam War in an effort to fix problems with original design. Mushface’s AR-50 is based on the first M-16s, so it doesn’t have the ribbed barrel that I usually draw on AR-50s.

That story was probably only interesting to me, but too bad. You read it, you can’t un-read it. 😛

Thanks for reading, see you Wednesday. Hopefully my cold will have gone away by then.
