Rent-A-Thug #174 – King of the Streets part 4
Rick Warner once again mugs for the camera, and then things that are actually interesting happen. I wanted a cool transition between the framing device and Mushface’s story, and while it’s not nearly on the level of The Goon, I think it works okay. If you haven’t read The Goon (a comic by Eric Powell, published by Dark Horse, which you should be reading because it’s fantastic), there’s a story in the first volume that features a flashback with one of the coolest transitions I’ve ever seen. The left half of the panel is inked and coloured, then blurs into just pencils on a sepia-tone background (like a wanted poster).
The headline in the newspaper is an example of something I’ve done quite a bit while drawing this story, which is using visual jokes instead of trying to cram jokes into Mushface’s narration. The comic equivalent of the spinning newspaper shows up a few times, too. Relatedly, I spent about twenty minutes trying to come up with a boob joke to go along with the “big bust…” sub-headline. The lack of boob joke should be a good indicator of how that went.
Thanks for reading, see you Friday!

Dude, you totally could have gone with “Big Bust makes goons look like boobs” as your byline joke…
