Rent-A-Thug #126 – Rules For Criminal Success #103

I wasn’t entirely sure about this one when I got started. I wasn’t sure if the whole “regulate = kill somebody with a shotgun” thing was clear, considering I took it from Star Wars: Battlefront II (which I’m assuming took it from somewhere else). Then I realized that it doesn’t really matter since the joke can also be read as industry regulation taken to an extreme. I didn’t think about it as hard as it may seem, though. Especially once I figured out how to stage it and realized that I’d get to draw Johnny Mushface blasting big chunks out of some dudes. Relatedly, Mushface’s shotgun is based on an Ithaca Stakeout.

I mentioned on Friday that I’ve been using sound effects that take up an entire panel a lot lately to imply action sequences that would take more room than I had if I actually tried to draw them out. This is another one of those. I think there might be one or two next week as well but I’m too lazy to dig out next week’s updates to check.

The two guys that Johnny Mushface takes out are the result of  me playing a lot of Grand Theft Auto IV. The Rasta looking guy was inspired by both Little Jacob and Playboy X, while the mafia guy on the right is the result of fond rememberances of Grand Theft Auto III and Liberty City Stories, both of which were full of suit-and-tie-clad mobsters. Interesting side note: writing a crime comic allows me to get away with playing GTA IV instead of doing work by calling it research. I would imagine the folks behind the (many) D&D inspired webcomics fall into a similar boat.

Also, as I’m sure you’ve all already noticed using your amazing powers of vision, I changed the header image. Apparently the “too big, too small, just right” pattern of Goldilocks and the Three Bears also applies to me trying to draw header graphics.

That’s it from me for today. Thanks for reading and see you on Wednesday!
